Language Levels (CEFR)

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) is the standard used in Europe to describe language ability.

Levels overview

A1: Beginner
A2: Elementary
B1: Intermediate
B2: Upper Intermediate
C1: Advanced
C2: Proficient

What this means for you

A1:

You understand and use basic words and phrases. You can have simple conversations with support.

A2:

You can communicate in everyday situations and understand simple texts and conversations.

B1:

You can manage most daily situations, express opinions and understand clear speech.

B2:

You speak fluently and take part in discussions. You understand more complex texts and conversations.

C1:

You use Dutch effectively in professional and social situations with a high level of accuracy.

C2:

You understand and use Dutch almost like a native speaker.
